Formed in 2004, Capital K-9s is a nonprofit organization comprised of
Madison area volunteers to assist the Madison Police Department (MPD) in
establishing a patrol K-9 unit. The organization is operated
by a Board of Directors.
Capital K-9s raises funds for the formation and maintenance of the K-9 unit,
and is also involved in community outreach and education
activities.
A patrol canine unit increases departmental efficiency, while enhancing the
safety of both officers and the community. Studies have shown that building
searches are quicker and more effective when a dog is used than when officers
alone are involved, with a significant increase in officer safety. Just
the presence of a canine tends to encourage quicker compliance in situations
that might otherwise become confrontational.
Capital K-9s currently has five dogs trained and on active duty:
Gildon (P.O. Jeff Felt),
Greg (P.O. Bart O'Shea),
Ivan (P.O. Henry Wilson),
Johnny (P.O. Jim Donnell),
and Sadie (P.O. Denise Markham).
In early 2006, Arno retired from active service
after more than six years of service to the community. Capital K-9s
plans to purchase, train and equip additional dogs as resources permit.
